On A Beach, By A Beach, Looking At A Beach...

The somewhat instinctual and yet profound psychological reasons behind why we humans generally all like beaches in some capacity is an interesting topic I found myself contemplating on multiple occasions. I mean, there has to be some good reasons why we like beaches, why we are drawn to them time and time again, whether that's in person or simply gazing at a photo on Instagram. After a little bit of actual research, the reasons became pretty clear.

Being on a Beach Soothes the Senses

As with many other natural landscapes, beaches draw you in because of your instinctive desire to be amazed. A beach offers a gorgeous view of the land and sea. Merely gazing out into the horizon is so enchanting due to the endless possibilities it suggests, and it almost makes you believe the world is infinitely flat. One definitely can feel very small and insignificant when presented with the majesty of the sea.

Beaches are also visually alluring because of their warm, relaxing color scheme. Rich, comforting palettes, such as a soft yellow mixed with shades of beige and orange, are common to beaches because of the sun and sand. So, too, are the soft blue-green hue of the ocean and light-blue tone of a clear sky.

Beaches hold a special place in our hearts because they connect us with nature in a profound way. It's called biophilia, a fancy word for our natural love of nature. When we're at the beach, the sound of waves, the feel of sand between our toes, and the vast ocean views all tap into this deep connection, making us feel calm and content.

The yin and yang of hot and cold is also extremely refreshing. You can be soaking up the blazing sun one minute and cooling off in the water the very next.

Escape from Routine

Beaches offer a temporary escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. They provide a serene sanctuary where we can disconnect from technology, unwind, and immerse ourselves in the present moment.

Beaches Are Fun!

Jump Into The Ocean

Let's be honest, we like having fun and being entertained! Beaches are naturally enjoyable because of the tons of different activities they allow you to do. For a chill time, you can bronze up your paling skin, read that best-seller you’ve had on your shelf since last Christmas, or just lay back under a sun umbrella.

On the other hand, the beach is a great place to participate in a bunch of high-power activities that will get your heart pumping. Several of those potentially adrenaline-boosting activities might include:

  • Surfing, boarding, or hover boarding
  • Flying a kite
  • Playing a game of beach volleyball or frisbee
  • Riding in a motor boat

Echoes of Childhood

Nostalgia sweeps over us as we wander along the beach, reminiscent of carefree days spent building sandcastles and hunting for seashells during childhood vacations. The echoes of laughter and the feeling of warm sand between our toes transport us back to simpler times, evoking a sense of joy and innocence. These memories, etched in the sands of time, hold a special place in our hearts, reminding us of the beauty of those bygone days.

Social Spaces

Beaches are vibrant hubs of social interaction, where people gather to unwind and connect with one another. From families building sandcastles to friends enjoying a beachside picnic, there's a palpable sense of togetherness that permeates the air. Whether it's sharing stories around a crackling bonfire or cheering on teammates during a game of beach soccer, the beach fosters bonds that last a lifetime.
As the sun dips below the horizon, beachgoers often find themselves engrossed in deep conversations or lost in the rhythm of the waves. It's a place where strangers become friends, memories are made, and the simple pleasures of life are savored beneath the open sky.

Simply Put...

We like beaches because they let us to enjoy ourselves according to how we like to spend our time, whether it means relaxing on a reclining chair or getting drenched in sweat and water. The psychology of why we like beaches is definitely tied to the irresistible, all-around positive vibe that surrounds it.
