Virginia Beach Like a Local Guide

Virginia Beach Like a Local Guide

As a Virginia Beach native (born and raised!), I might be a little biased when it comes to my love of the area. There are so many things to love about this place, but if you really want to make the most of your next visit, you need to know how to do Virginia Beach like a local!

We are breaking down all the best places to check out. That way you never have to ask yourself – where should we go next?!

Okay, we realize that it’s called Virginia Beach, and there are miles of oceanfront and boardwalk to enjoy… But let’s be honest – locals avoid the oceanfront during prime tourist season. Instead, you can find us hanging out at Chesapeake Bay, affectionately known to the locals as "Chic's Beach" or Sandbridge Beach.

Both of these beaches free, public access to the ocean. They are clean (since both visitors and locals take care of the land), and it is so much more calming. The beach gets slightly crowded in the height of summer, but nothing like at the oceanfront. Neither of these beaches is really commercialized, but you’ll be able to enjoy specialty, local places to enjoy a meal, or purchase a trinket to remember your trip.

There are so many amazing places to eat; we would have to devote an entire blog post to just food! Instead, here are a few places you simply MUST check out while you’re in town.

  • Waterman’s Surfside Grille: Seafood is their specialty, and trying an Orange Crush needs to be on the to-do list!
  • Lubo Wine Tasting Room: More wines than you can shake a stick at, and don’t leave without tasting their award winning Black and Blue Nachos!
  • Bay Local Eatery: This place boasts an awesome happy hour menu and rotating drink specials. Seafood is what you want to eat here; I strongly suggest the Shrimp Tachos (tater-tot nachos, don’t knock it till you’ve tried it!) or the Crab Cake Benedict.
  • Iggles Cheesesteaks & Burgers: The closest you’ll get to Philly here in Virginia Beach!
  • The Back Deck: Amazing seafood and a gorgeous view of sunset on the water to enjoy while you eat.
  • Gingo’s Taqueria: Hands down my favorite place to go for tacos. The Baha Fish taco is amazing, as well as the street style pork taco. Their Margarita’s are a delicious addition to any meal!

  • Hinderland Trading: Indulge your creative side by creating your one of a kind piece, or shop their premade terrariums and home décor.
  • Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center: The sea turtles are my favorite, and this venue is great for couples, families or groups.
  • Virginia Beach Farmers Market: This multi-vendor market is teeming with local produce and fresh goodies.
  • Green Leaf and Pebble Tea Spa & Café: This boasts the ultimate in relaxation, from Mermaid Lemonade to Mimosa’s and frozen tea chillers… it’s the perfect way to relax and unwind before a massage.
  • Visiting the Atlantic Fun Park is lots of fun, with games, rides and (of course) cotton candy and funnel cake!
  • Rudee Tours has lots of options to get you out on the water: Fishing trips, Sunset Cruises, Dolphin/Whale Watching, and more!
  • Town Center Virginia Beach offers unique shops, delish restaurants, and lots of local flavor! You must got to The Royal Chocolate and try their dipped apples!
  • If you are feeling artistic, check out Muse Paintbar and create your own personal work of art.
  • Visit the Adventure Park for ziplining through the trees.
  • Rent a kayak and paddle through one of Virginia Beach’s beautiful waterways. Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) is a lot harder than it looks, but oh so much fun!
  • Hike one of the many trails at Back Bay Wildlife Refuge or First Landing State Park.

  • The Bee and The Biscuit: Breakfast, Lunch, Tea Room, Wine Tasting & Events in the Heart of Pungo Village
  • Hair of the Dog Eatery: Hands down, the best biscuits and gravy you’ll ever have in your life (I think the secret is in those cheesy biscuits!). I’m from the South, so that’s saying something!
  • Mermaid Winery : Touted as an urban vineyard because they make everything on site. Their house wines are amazing (the Siren’s white is where it’s at!), and they just released a small batch of a sparkling rosé wine!
  • My Vegan Sweet Tooth: This is not just a cupcake place. They also have cakes, cookies, breads, and their famous cinnamon rolls. The shop’s mission is to show that vegan goodies are even better than non-vegan!
